The Ghosts of Stone Gate
Deep in the forest of Stone Gate lie the remains of a Confederate fortification and breastworks. A cannon earth platform can still be seen protecting the long row of curved trenches facing eastward. In the quiet forest, you can almost hear the rebel yells as the Ohio calvalry unit charges. The attack is repulsed and eighteen Ohio boys loose their lives. No rebel casualty records exist. One wonders what is buried under the pyramids of grapefruit size stones neatly stacked around the site. The Seige of Lynchburg was ending with this key southern city still intact. Little did the southerners realize that the General Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, tired and out of supplies, was soon to surrender to General Grant at the McLean House, scarcely fifteen miles from the forests of Stone Gate.
